Walking into a room full of people, she often felt unnoticed and unattractive, especially compared to the beautiful, full-figured, fair-skinned women around her. Despite dressing to impress, having her hair perfectly styled, and practicing conversations in the mirror, she always left social gatherings questioning God: “Why did you give me this skin complexion? Why am I not pretty? Why can’t I speak eloquently?” These feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem plagued her.
Low self-esteem, defined as a lack of confidence in one’s abilities and worth, affects nearly 80% of women, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. Many women feel less than due to their physical appearance rather than their personal achievements.
Her first encounter with low self-esteem occurred at the age of five. A family friend needed a flower girl for her wedding, but she was overlooked in favor of her sister, labeled as the more attractive daughter. This rejection left her feeling unworthy and unattractive, shaping her self-perception into young adulthood.
The rejection led her down a path of promiscuity, jealousy, lust, and covetousness. She masked her true identity with a false one, buying revealing clothing, wearing excessive makeup, and even purchasing colored contacts. She became a victim of identity theft, influenced by her flesh and the enemy. She believed the lies that these actions would make her worthy of attention, love, and acceptance. Instead, she fell into debt, wasted time, and pursued ungodly relationships.
The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, which is why she refers to low self-esteem as the “Identity Sucker” (John 10:10). It drains life emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. However, Jesus said in the same scripture that He came to give life abundantly.
In 2015, she was delivered from low self-esteem when God filled her with the Holy Ghost. She transitioned from being a victim to a victor, and you can too with these steps:
Step #1: Receive full biblical salvation according to Acts 2:38. Walk in the Holy Ghost power and the authority of your new identity (2 Corinthians 5:17, Colossians 3:1-4, Romans 8:14-15).
Step #2: Perpetually look in the mirror, both spiritually and naturally. Daily read, study, and apply the Bible. This spiritual mirror will not always reflect what you want to see, but it will validate your true identity. You will possess GOD-FIDENCE that no one can take away, even if you aren’t a size 2.
May this article speak to young women suffering from low self-esteem. God is a deliverer and can equip you with the power to walk in your true identity in Christ Jesus.
